  1. The effects of chronic sleep reduction on the performance of cognitive tasks sensitive to sleep deprivation

Mark Blagrove, Carol Alexander, James A. Horne · 1995 · Applied Cognitive Psychology · 88 citations

In four sleep loss experiments we aimed, first, to compare performance during long‐term sleep reduction with performance during short‐term total sleep deprivation, and second, to measure the effects of both methods of sleep loss on ability to ignore distracting irrelevant stimuli, using a finding embedded figures test (FEFT). Logical reasoning, auditory vigilance and finding embedded figures tasks were shown to be significantly sensitive to one night's sleep deprivation. However, in one sleep reduction study subjects reduced to a mean of 5.2 hours sleep per night for 4 weeks showed no performance deficits on logical reasoning. In a second sleep reduction study subjects reduced to a mean of 4

  2. Sleep Deprivation and Sustained Attention Performance: Integrating Mathematical and Cognitive Modeling

Glenn Gunzelmann, Joshua B. Gross, Kevin A. Gluck, et al. · 2009 · Cognitive Science · 83 citations

A long history of research has revealed many neurophysiological changes and concomitant behavioral impacts of sleep deprivation, sleep restriction, and circadian rhythms. Little research, however, has been conducted in the area of computational cognitive modeling to understand the information processing mechanisms through which neurobehavioral factors operate to produce degradations in human performance. Our approach to understanding this relationship is to link predictions of overall cognitive functioning, or alertness, from existing biomathematical models to information processing parameters in a cognitive architecture, leveraging the strengths from each to develop a more comprehensive exp

  3. Influence of Sleep Deprivation on Cognitive Performance

    Chitralekha Rajuskar -, Vishal Badarke - · 2024 · International Journal For Multidisciplinary Research · 1 citations

Sleep deprivation is a pervasive phenomenon affecting millions worldwide, with profound implications for cognitive performance. This article explores the intricate interplay between sleep and cognition, examining the multifaceted effects of sleep deprivation on various aspects of cognitive function. Drawing upon neuro scientific research and clinical studies, we delve into the biological mechanisms underlying the impact of sleep loss on memory, attention, executive function, and emotional regulation. Additionally, we explore the implications of sleep deprivation for academic and occupational performance, as well as its potential long-term consequences for cognitive health. This article aims

  4. Sleep Deprivation, Memory Consolidation, and Cognitive Function: A Neuroscience Analysis

Anting Cai · 2026 · Theoretical and Natural Science

Although the negative effects of sleep deprivation on learning, memory and executive function are well-known, an increasing number of studies have put forward that these impairments are mainly due to a disturbance in sleep-dependent memory consolidation rather than fatigue alone. This paper investigates the connection between sleep and memory and cognition, examines how the brain processes information during sleep to promote learning, and enhances high-order thinking skills. Currently, it has been shown that memories formed in a waking state are organised during sleep through cooperation among the hippocampus, neocortex and prefrontal cortex. Meanwhile, there is temporal coupling between the
